Kedara Gowri Vratam: A Sacred Ritual for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
Kedara Gowri Vratam is a Hindu ritual observed by devotees of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the day of Deepavali. It is believed that by performing this vratam, one can attain the blessings of the divine couple and fulfill their wishes. The Lord Shiva replied that the sage Bhringi was his ardent devotee and he did not consider anyone else as his god. The Goddess Parvati was not satisfied with this answer and she wanted to test the sage's devotion. She asked the Lord Vishnu to help her in this task. The Lord Vishnu agreed and he created a maya (illusion) around the Lord Shiva and the Goddess Parvati. He made them appear as one body with two heads, four arms and four legs. This form of the divine couple is known as Ardhanarishvara.
When the sage Bhringi came again to worship the Lord Shiva, he saw the Ardhanarishvara form and he was confused. He did not want to worship the Goddess Parvati along with the Lord Shiva. He prayed to the Lord Shiva to separate himself from the Goddess Parvati. The Lord Shiva smiled and granted his wish. He separated himself from the Goddess Parvati and stood on one side. The sage Bhringi was happy and he went to worship the Lord Shiva.
But as he approached the Lord Shiva, he saw that there was a wall of fire between him and the Lord Shiva. The wall of fire was created by the Goddess Parvati to prevent the sage from reaching the Lord Shiva. The sage Bhringi was determined to worship the Lord Shiva and he decided to cross the wall of fire. He took the form of a bee and flew through a small gap in the wall of fire. He reached the Lord Shiva and circumambulated him three times.
The Goddess Parvati was angry with the sage's stubbornness and she cursed him to lose his flesh and blood. The sage Bhringi became a skeleton and he fell down on the ground. He realized his mistake and begged for forgiveness from the Goddess Parvati. He understood that the Lord Shiva and the Goddess Parvati are inseparable and they are one soul in two bodies. He also realized that without worshipping both of them, his devotion was incomplete.
The Goddess Parvati was pleased with his repentance and she blessed him to regain his flesh and blood. She also gave him a boon that whoever worships both of them together on the day of Deepavali will be blessed with prosperity, happiness and liberation. She also told him that this vratam is called Kedara Gowri Vratam because it is performed in honour of Lord Kedareswara, who is none other than Lord Shiva himself.
